The University of Oxford, informally known as Oxford University or simply Oxford, is a collegiate research university located in Oxford, England. It is the oldest university in the English-speaking world with evidence of teaching dating back to 1096. The university grew rapidly after English students were banned from the University of Paris in 1167. After disputes in 1209, some academics moved to Cambridge, establishing the University of Cambridge. The two universities are often jointly referred to as "Oxbridge."
