Hypochondriasis is a condition where the patient has a preoccupation with having a serious illness despite medical evaluation failing to find evidence of such a disease. The preoccupation lasts for at least 6 months and causes marked distress or impairment in functioning. Patients may have unrealistic concerns about their health, such as believing minor symptoms indicate a severe illness. It is also associated with panic disorder and major depressive disorder.
