Totalitarian society is characterized by complete state control over all aspects of life. Examples include Nazi Germany and the USSR under Stalin. In such societies, there is often one ruling party, dissent is suppressed. In Orwell's 1984, traits of totalitarianism are described: constant surveillance, information control, brainwashing. Emphasis is placed on ideology, as in China since 1949. Secret police may operate in totalitarian regimes, like the KGB in the USSR. Personal rights are limited or nonexistent, and society is under constant surveillance
