Indene-based sulfonated aromatic cation exchanger (IESA) was synthesized from pyrolysis oil by isolating indene, characterizing it using FT-IR, TGA, and GC-MS, sulfonating it with sulfuric acid, and polycondensing it with formalin. The synthesized IESA showed superior properties compared to commercial equivalents.
