Robert Burns (25 January 1759 – 21 July 1796) was a Scottish poet and lyricist widely celebrated as the national poet of Scotland. He is best known for writing in the Scots language, with a "light Scots dialect" of English. Burns also wrote in standard English, often including political or civil commentary in his works.
